Can the police read license plate numbers in the street view images that Google cars take?

I was looking at a block of New York City on Google Earth. In the street view images that they do with a car that has a camera mounted on it, you can see a vehicle that is parked at a fire hydrant pull into traffic and then make a left turn into a parking lot exit (not an entrance) that has two "do not enter" signs. It is very clear that the vehicle was illegally parked, not just stopped, and that it went by both "do not enter" signs. In the images on the Internet, the resolution is not high enough to read the license plate. Should I alert the police so that they can ask Google for the originals? (I am not sure if Google lowers the resolution to save bandwidth and improve transfer time, or if the originals are just as bad as the images online? Can the police read license plate numbers in the street view images that Google cars take?
