Stupid Idiot Google Maps?

As many of you will know, Google Earth has been discarded in favour of Google Maps/Google Street View. I've no problem with discarding old technology when it's replaced with something better, in this case though, Google Maps is inferior

They no longer give you Latitude and Longitude positioning and you can no longer measure a distance. You can still 'mark a place', but it's less than obvious how to do it

There's a message telling me 'You have no starred places'. Well, that's because there's no obvious way to 'star' a place

Is there anyone out there whose studied computers at university for about 10 years who knows how to do this?Stupid Idiot Google Maps?
Google Earth has not been discarded. For Latitude and Longitude in Maps right click and select the What's Here? option.Stupid Idiot Google Maps?
They still offer a download of Google Earth 6, so why is it "discarded"?
